If I wanted investment property........

I'd attend the Vacant Property Auction that's being hosted by Department of Housing and Community Development.  More than 30 properties were selected from a list of over 200.   I hope that you have a handyman in your back pocket beacuse they are all sold as is and they need plenty of work.  If you are interested in bidding, you have to fill out a bidders form.  You can get one at the website listed below.

If I Were a Bride to Be.....................

Or just loved fashion shows, bridal or otherwise, I'd go to the Washington DC Couture Wedding Consortium 2009 Couture Bridal Show.

The show will feature gorgeous dresses by designers such as Lea-Ann Belter, Elizabeth Fillmore, and L'ezu Atelier just to name a few.  It'll also be packed with extras.  At 3:30 they will be giving away a free wedding!  Who couldnt use that.  It's a Soup to Nuts package that include invitations, photographers, a florist, and much much more.  All of this for a recession approved price tag.  It's Free!  What are you waiting for?

If I Were Feeling Crafty.....

Which I always am.  I'd go to the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival in Chantilly.  I heart craft fairs.  It's the perfect place to find everything from craft wares to jewelery to pottery.  My most unique jewlery pieces have come from craft fairs.  And this looks like it's going to be a great one.  They have over 300 Artist and Craft Designers.  They also have a list of food vendors.  This place has it all! Including Free Parking

If I were Feeling Cultured......

I'd visit as many Museums as possible (while secretly hoping that I run into our new First Family).  DC is Museum Central.  It's home to the expansive Smithsonian Family of Museums as well as National Geographic (which also has an IMAX theater) and the uber cool Spy Museum.  If you like, well, anything, DC has a museum for it.  They even have a brand new Newseum which I hear is Fab-u-lous.  I can't wait to go.

Vision Wall - Decor for my toddler

This Vision Wall is dedicated to my daughter.

My 2 year old daughter needs all new furniture now that her baby brother is inheriting her baby furniture.  She already has her "big girl" bed.  I bought a cute upholstered headboard for her bed.  Now, I need to add a chest, desk and accent pieces.  As tempting as it is to design her room with everything Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I must refrain.  I want to select decor that she can grow into not something that I will have to change in a few months when decides that Dora the Explorer and/or the Backyardagains are her new faves.  Decor costs money.  This is what I envision for her:

I love the detail on this furniture.  I would really love to buy her a chest for the foot of her bed.  Any of you mom's have any idea where I can find one?  I want something cute but functional, perhaps a bench that opens to a chest.  Thoughts?

My daughter is a fireball.  She is all smiles and endless energy.  When I initially started putting a vision wall together for my daughter's decor, I thought I would do bright colors and polka dots because that would match her energy;  however, it occurred to me that perhaps her room should be a place of tranquility, a place that would entice her to slow down and relax.  It is hard enough to get her to wind down for bedtime without me adding purple and lime green polka dots to the mix.  I'll save the bold and bright decor for her playroom. 

I never considered myself a shabby chic or pastel kinda mom, but I came upon the furniture above and bedding and decor below and fell in love.  Since I birthed this amazing little dynamo, a part of me became a sucker for the girlie things.  As for the decor, I like victorian inspired sparse floral print, a chandelier, and crown moulding:

Because the colors are pale, I think I may have to do a deeper color on her walls to give the room some pop.  I don't want to overwhelm the room with pink, so I am thinking something like a rich tan, sand, or a darker shade of mauve.  I know it is all very Secret Garden esk but I think it is so sweet.  Rosenberry Rooms and Pottery Barn Kids will get me every time.

I Aint Sayin She's a Gold Digger...

Merriam-Webster's definition of a Gold  Digger is a person who uses charm to extract money or gifts.

On my way to work on Monday, I heard an interesting topic on a syndicated radio show.  There was a segment for women to call in and gripe about the general problems that they have with men.  The men had their moment on Friday.  On our day, the usual things came out.  I hate men who lie.  I hate men who cheat, etc.

One caller caught my attention.  Her statement was that she was tired of men acting like we shouldn't have standards when it comes to what we want from them. That they act like we shouldn't want them to have jobs and drive nice cars.  They feel that we should just take whatever.

That struck me.  To me, not having any standards is settling.  Is there a fine line between being a gold digger and wanting a man that is well established?   I can see the callers point. Now, I'm not a car person.  I can't look at a car and tell you how much it cost.  Hell, I don't even know how much mine is worth right now.  As long as it's running, has automatic doors and locks, I'm happy.  I'm also partial to heated seats, but that's neither here nor there.

If cars were my thing, why is it wrong for me to want a man with a nice car.  Why is it wrong to want a man with a comfortable or extraordinary living?  Does that mean that I also don't want him to be good, loyal, honest, and loving?  I've never dated a guy who made enough money to fully support me.  And I can't say that I'd let him.  There's just something about having my own that would be hard to let go of.    But having the option is definitely something that I could get used too.  

I also, read an article today on essence.com about Lisa Raye.  Now, I'm not a huge Lisa Raye fan.  I can take her or leave her.  Sidenote***she does look great for her age.  She made a point about the type of men that she chooses to date.  She stated that her father was a multimillionaire and that she liked the finer things in life, so she doesn't apologize for the type of men that she chooses to date.  

Usually when this is discussed, the first thing that people say is that she may be overlooking a great guy who's just an average joe.  But how often will she come across that type of guy in her circle.  I have a hard time meeting him and I'm surrounded by average joes.  

Personally, I think that nothing is as sexy as executed ambition.  An ambitious man who truly pursues his passion will never be broke.  He may not be a multimillionaire, but more often than not, he'll always be gainfully employed.   He'll always have a hustle.  And if he hasn't realized his pursuit yet, I'm happy to help him.  What I'm not happy to do is push him to pursue a dream that he's not willing to work on just as hard as I am.  That statement may or may not seem gold-diggerish (my new word for this convo).  But tell that to a guy with no job and no ambition, and he may accuse me wanting too much.  If he finds himself out of work, which may be a reality right now, I'm happy if he's trying and not getting comfortable resting on his laurels.  And again, on top of that he has to be loyal, honest, and loving.  I don't know that I could take any of these things individually.   It's a package deal.  

My personal definition of a gold-digger is someone who's only criteria for companionship is monetary.  Their only goal is to find someone to fund their life of slackness.  Regardless of how someone treats them, they will accept it and become whatever the other person wants them to become so that they will not have to support themselves.  

Based on that and her remark, I personally don't consider Lisa Raye a gold digger.  She continued to work and have her own thing.  To want a man who has just as much or more, isn't asking too much.  I'm sure that her minimum income bracket for men is a lot higher that mine, but doesn't make her wrong.  I think that we as a society may be using the term Gold Digger to loosely.

So Blushing ladies stand up.  It's ok to want a little more or a little less than the next person.  Just want something.

The Art of Being a Daughter-in-Law - Part I

You don't just marry the man you marry the family.  We have all heard the mantra but we don't realize how true and complicated it is until we actually marry.  When my husband and I were dating, I saw how close he was to his family.  It was one of the things I loved about him.  When we married, I made my vows to him but I also made a few to myself.  I understood before we married that it is hard marrying into someone's family.  You may love him but that doesn't mean that your personality will mesh with his family dynamic.  It takes time to forge relationships with your in-laws.  The chief vow that governs my relationship with my in-laws is "mind my damn business unless it involves my marriage, my children, or me."  I learned that by watching my mother interact with my father's family.  My mom was a wiz at crafting that art.

I have the usual daughter-in-law complaints:  passive aggressiveness; unsolicited opinions; critiques on my child rearing; critiques on cooking for her son; unannounced visits; and otherwise ignoring boundaries.  In the grand scheme of things, I have it pretty good.  My mother-in-law is a genuinely nice person, and she loves my daughter dearly.  I have heard some mother-in-law horror stories.  Certainly, my complaints are further agitated by my territorial nature or, as my sister calls it, my "tiger mom" temperament.

Last week, I saw my mother-in-law as someone other than my husband's mother and the self-appointed overseer of how I run my house.  She and I were talking about her being more active and engaging in social events and for the first time I saw a vulnerability in her that resonated with me.  She spoke about finding her purpose and finding that thing that inspires new life in her.  I always knew that being a recent widow was hard on her.  I had seen the vulnerability that my father-in-law's death caused in her.  Today, I saw a vulnerability that was more than loss of a spouse.  It was that vulnerability that comes with trying to discover yourself after that loss.  It is a sudden ice cold barrel of water that life throws on you and then leaves you to shiver.  I watched my father shiver after my mom died.  I saw that vulnerability in him.  I saw in him that same need to find the thing to turn on the light inside of him.  He was still searching for it when he died a few years later.  Last week, she was not my mother-in-law but someone with dreams and sensitivities.  I understand the need to find purpose outside of your family and career.  We all hope to find that thing we were put here to accomplish - that thing we were meant to do.  Hell, I hope blogging helps me find mine.

So, the art to being a daughter-in-law has nothing to do with being a daughter.  Let's face it...marrying into a family is very different from being born into it.  While the "you are my daughter now" sentiment is nice, it is not rooted in reality.  There will always be a conflict of interest and that conflict is your husband.  I always rejected the "you are my daughter now" sentiment because there is only one woman that could truly love me as her daughter and she is the woman who gave birth to me, and I buried her years ago.  I think the art of being a daughter-in-law manifests in knowing how to be a friend and giving my husband insight into his mom's feelings and needs.  With this in mind, I will approach our relationship as such.  I will listen when she is compelled to share her pursuit of happiness with me.  I will no longer reject every unsolicited opinion and passive aggressive critique she offers as invasion of my space and sensibilities.  I will try not to reject her opinions as an invasion of my space and sensibilities.  I will treat our relationship, as any other growing relationship, with patience and care.  However, as I have in the past, I will leave the daughtering to her daughters.

I cannot tell a lie, Ladies.  When I give birth to my son in a couple of weeks and the baby blues set in, I cannot be held responsible for the foamed mouth growling that will occur at the entrance to this "tiger mom" den.

About 2 years ago, I spoke to my friend KC about her recent vacation.   She said that she went to Arizona and stayed at a resort for 4 days.  So I asked who she went with.   Her travel partner surprised me.  She didn't have one.  She said that she just had to get away from the city, work, family, and friends, so she took a vacation.  By herself.  She said that it was the best thing that she'd ever done.  I asked if she felt safe traveling alone and she said that she just stayed on the property, but enjoyed chatting with different people at the hotel and then going by the pool to read a book.  She also said that she wore a two-piece that she wouldn't have otherwise worn since she didn't know anyone there.  She said "Girl, my stuff was probably hangin all over the place, but I didn't care."

Last year I had a serious burn-out.  I'd been working a ridiculous amount of hours and I'd been doing a lot of traveling for outside obligations.  I was in the process of devising a plan to have my friends go on vacation with me.  But my friends are just as busy as I am and I needed a vacation NOW.  I thought back to the story that KC told me. and thought, hell, why not.  

Now keep in mind, I'm not one to do things alone.  The first time that I went out to a restaurant and ate by myself was a little over a year ago.  But since i really needed to get away,  I booked a weekend at my favorite spa hotel in Williamsburg.  I arrived on Friday and checked-out on Sunday.  They were having a fabulous special, so I was able to upgrade to a beautiful one-bedroom apartment-style suite for a few dollars more.

It was great!!!  I got there on Friday night and just kicked back.  I had a glass of wine and relaxed.  On Saturday, I had breakfast in my room and went off to enjoy a few spa treatments that I booked.  Throughout the day, I caught up on emails from my friends, read a book, took a walk on the property, went out to eat, and had a great time striking up conversations with some of my fellow guest. 

As I drove home on Sunday, I wondered why I hadn't done this earlier.  Could I have done all of this at home.  Probably, but the change in scenery was just what I needed. 

There was a point where traveling alone would have never been a possibility.  I have to admit that part of the reason that I chose this particular resort is because I'd been there several times and felt relatively safe.  I never told anyone that I was there alone and I was careful not to give out my room number.  

As I sat down to create my vision wall, I thought about the things that I wanted to bring from 2008, into 2009.  I thought back to my solo vacation and how it energized me.  There have been times where I've wanted to get away, but didn't have anyone to travel with, so I wouldn't go.  But not this year.  If my peeps aren't available to go, then adiós amigos.  I'm off by myself.   I've also pledged to take it before I reach the end of my rope.  I think that I'll enjoy it more.  

I'm not sure where I'll go this year, but I'm already excited!!!  With the way that work has been going, I could be taking my vacation very soon.

The Inauguration Day recap

What a historic day January 20, 2009 was!  It was the day the first African American President was sworn in and bigger than all of that, it was a day that I had my first fan encounter!  That's right folks, I am now famous, but I will fill you in on that piece later. 

Inaugural Day

HOLY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!  I mean people were everywhere all the time people.  Since we had partied ourselves silly the night before we overslept a bit  and didn't head to the metro until 8 in the morning.  Our original plan was to be there by 6.  oops liquor won that morning.  When we got to the exit for the metro there were cars parked along the highway, and more that were being towed.  There was a sign that said no more parking at the station.  we were like uh oh, but gave it a try anyways.  There just wasn't anymore FREE parking.  We got parked and headed to the metro feeling like we just missed a huge bullet...but nope when we reached the station there was a line wrapped around the thing.  it was craziness.  We stood in that line for an hour and a half.  it was freezing.  Even with my layers of clothes, I had on leggings, socks, jeans, 2 t-shirts and a sweater and my big down coat with the fur hood and a hat I was frigid.  I WAS READY.  Now remember the smart trip cards we put the money on for today?  They came in handy once we got to the front of the line.  only those with cards could go forward but we weren't charged anything so D.C. still got my money!  Another piece of joy encountered.  Yes!  The normally 18 minute train ride took 45 minutes.  It was excruciating.  Especially because we knew how long the ride really should take.  Once we were downtown there was a mass exodus to ONE street with a gazillion people on it.  They were all shapes, sizes, nationalities, ages, racial backgrounds, etc.  it was like a true melting pot in the middle of the city. 
Now Tee and I head to where our ticket area is while Cuz went to find his own spot.  We got to our designated area and it was at a stand still.  I started to panic, finally we found out that some non ticket folks had busted down a barricade and filled the silver area...which meant no silver ticket holders could fit (Later we found out Cuz was all up in the barricade break down).  WHAT??????????  Tee and I make a mad dash to another entry way.  There was no way we were going to miss this.  Every street we try to cut down is blocked.  AHHHH!!!  We are booking it.  In the middle of our walk I took her hand and we said a prayer.  I needed something to calm me down.  But not to worry blushing ladies we got to an entrance and got to see the whole thing via a jumbotron amongst the people.  Below are the lists of my highlights:

• No one acted like a fool with the stop pushing me, why you so close to me business.
• It wasn't as cold as I was expecting (maybe cause of the layers or the 30 minute speed walk)
• being able to share the experience with a friend. 
• the crowd booing when Bush came out. 
• Our group of people starting to sing "na na na na heyyyyyyyy goodbye" after the boos. 
• Seeing Michelle hear us and mouth a wow.  Awesome. 
• It was an indescribable experience.  Emotion came over Tee and I almost immediately once we made it to our piece of the mall.  I think the panic of potentially not seeing it made us a little more breakable.  When I saw Barack on the screen before he walked out on the stage....I started crying and hugging Tee.  it sounds lame as I type it but it didn't feel like it yesterday.  There are really no words to detail how it felt to see an African American first family.  Never thought I would see it. 
• the camaraderie of the crowd, when the swearing in began people were reaching over to people they didn't know and were giving each other high fives.  Great times. 

Now for the worst moments: 

• D.C. should not be allowed to have large functions.  They really suck at it.  There were only 2 ways out to one metro station.  For those of us from out of town we didn't know where to go.  So I called Sheena to come to her place to watch the parade.  She lived a short 10 minute walk from where we were (on a normal day).  One hour and half later we reached her place.  Did we get lost?  No.  Did we stop to see something?  NO.  D.C had closed every road we needed and had no direction on where we could go.  We spent that whole 90 minutes walking in the FREEZING COLD aimlessly on a roundabout unlabled detour that took us 15 blocks out of our way.  I now say D.C. stands for dumb city (no offense DCers). 
• Sound system-Yeah I get that there were millions of folks out there, it was outdoors, the reflection pool was there but in this day and age there should be a way to have speakers with the jumbotrons so we could hear everything clearly.  Instead I had to read the speech on the screen which caused our area to have delayed reactions. 
• Cops-they were there but from all over.  No one knew anything cause they were a cop from Virginia or Michigan.  GRRRR. 
• People in groups of four or more who walk linked together through hoards of people.  You are messing up the rotation with the 6th grade crap.  KEEP IT MOVING. 
• Slow walkers should stay to the right.  They should not be in the middle or the left.  They should stay to the right, just like cars.  If they are not on the right I should be allowed to trip them from behind like we used to do as kids. 

Funniest moments: 

• Cuz tripping up the escalator at the Metro...HILARIOUS. 
• When I asked Tee for her hand for our prayer she looked at me and said "why are your hands cold?" 
• People with picket signs against the homos and baby killers.
• One lone gay man with a rainbow scarf next to the religious tyrants.
• Same gay man yelling "Hey Reverend look at me...Homo alert homo alert" as he swung his rainbow scarf above his head like a helicopter. 
• Getting to Sheena's house and her mother being ready with hot tea with a little Captain in it.  Thanks Mom!  
• Me seeing Spike Lee and wife and not being able to realize it was Spike Lee until Tee said that was Spike Lee.  I just thought they looked familiar.  LOL.

Now to the evening...
We were supposed to go to a dinner, but we could not move by the time dinner time rolled around plus my feet were throbbing like CRAZY.  So we skipped the dinner, took a nap to get ready for the post Inaugural ball/after party which was hosted by Jeffrey Wright with DJ MC Lyte.  Again it was a very classy affair.  everyone looked so nice dressed up, including us.    There were performances by Buddy Guy, the band from the Cadillac records movie, and Jackson Brown.  Even MC Lyte did a little I rock the party.  Here's why this party was dope...open bar, passed vittles, it was in an art gallery with nothing but different Barack paintings that were phenomenal, and celebrities just hanging with everyone.  Here were the sightings:  Jeffrey Wright (I introduced myself to him since he is friends with my Uncle.  At first he was about to play me but once I said who I was he was all kisses and hugs), Hill Harper (I swear he looked at me like he recognized me from Sunday), Tatiana Ali (she is very very pretty...she had nude stockings on with an open toe shoe but still pretty), Kevin Eubanks from the tonight show (Guess what?  He's SHORTTTTTTTTTT.), Alonzo Mourning and his wife (they are now my favorite couple, they looked fantastic all weekend and they partied like what), and Me (so I am standing at a table praying my feet don't need to be amputated after the day's events when a woman comes up to me and says I really think I know you from somewhere.  What do you do?  I tell her my job that pays the bills, she says no that's not it.  I add I also do Comedy.  She says "Oh my god, that's it!  I saw you perform in NYC and you are hilarious!  I love you!").  Folks that's my first fan approaching.  WOW!  We didn't get home until 5 am and we crashed as soon as we hit the door but it was so WORTH IT.  I am sure there are things missing but if you have questions don't be afraid to ask.

MLK DAY in DC

    First I must extend my apologies.  This has been one crazy 24 hours or so and I have had no time to write.  So here I am a day behind.  Let's get caught up...So for yesterday the important piece was going to pick up my tickets.  Lucky for me I have a friends in high places...we are going to own the world one day...so I was able to get 2 tickets to the inauguration.  We figured we could ride on down to the capitol on Monday and run in and pick up our tix.  Oh really???  NOPE.  Apparently 200,000 other people thought the same thing.  We ended up standing on line for 2 hours for the tickets.  And what I saw was unbelievable.  I think the cold had folks going crazy.  The folks from PETA should have been out there with their red paint.  There were so many animals on people's backs it was crazy.  I think a man had an actual raccoon on his head...it was moving and everything.  There were a few that would have been safe from PETA because they were wearing stuffed animals.  I think someone had Elmo on.  Poor Elmo.    Then there were the crazies...like the dude with a t shirt and jeans on...ummm where did he think he was going?  It's January.  

    Speaking of that I think Obama needs to change the date of the Inauguration to some time in May or June so the weather is better.  Those 2 hours almost killed me, mainly cause I wasn't prepared to be out there.  As I got closer to the door I started getting colder and colder.  I could see the promised land but I just didn't think I would ever reach it, that is until I got a call from the office that they would bring the tix down to us.  THANK YOU JESUS!  I felt like Harriet Tubman when she reached freedom.  From there we went to add money to our metro card so we were good to go for Tuesday.  Way to be prepared right?  Yeah we did that and then went to get on the train and WE DIDN'T have to pay!  What?  D.C. got me for my 10 bucks.  Sneaky sneaky.  Please note that during all of this, there was no real traffic or a lot of folks.  It was pretty much smooth sailing.  

    Then we went to the mall for some last minute purchases like gloves and such for my cousin, Cuz, from Canada.  Why he would not have gloves and a scarf for an outdoor activity is beyond me!  Anyways while we were there we got something to eat.  While in the food court I discovered that when I have kids they are NOT allowed to go to the mall by themselves.  There were so many teens or pre-teens at the mall on these dates and such.  After I got past my jealousness, I discovered that my kid is going to lie to me and say she is meeting her friends when in fact she is meeting some dirty lil boy.  I digress.  And my other piece of birth control for the day was when a crying 9 year old was fighting his mother and trying to tear her purse from her arm screaming "Give me my money!"  As I watched this woman stop and try to talk to the raging lunatic I again had an epiphany that when I have kids they will probably be taken away from me because of my abuse.  Mainly cause if I was that woman I would be beating that kid with my purse.  Once we came home it was time to get dressed to meet my friends, Sheena and Denise, for drinks before our party night.  We had drinks at a neighborhood type location with a fancy but equally a ripoff, jukebox.  It is always great to crack jokes with old friends and make new ones.  I also met a man that thinks wearing berets is ok.  Nope it isn't, but Cuz told him it was nice so now dude thinks he's cool with his lame beret.  After an hour or so with Sheena and Denise I was pretty much feeling good in the neighborhood.  I think we all were (Tee, S, and Cuz).  We left there and went to a Pre-Inaugural ball at the Shadow room.  It was a grand drunken time!  We danced ourselves silly!  Only issue though was the old broads wearing their animals...the coat check woman was like "I am not responsible for these coats" old lady was like "check my coat B*tch".  Needless to say no animal coats were checked.  Oh well Oh well.  At this party was a random ginormous bowl of shrimp, I don't know why or who was eating it but just wanted you to know it was there.  The DJ for the night was NY's own DJ Envy who was wearing white suspenders.  Every time I looked at him I saw Cab Calloway in the "Alright" video.  We didn't' get home until 4 am which wasn't a good look considering the inauguration was that same morning.  Oops...liquor wins again.  I'll type more about today tomorrow since the day isn't done yet.

Oh and i did wear sneakers.

Left Standing Update

 Ok, so here's the update on the guy from the left standing story.  My cousin and I went to see Notorious last Friday.  Yes, the same one who hooked me up with the Home Depot guy.  We'll call him HD.  While we were at the theater, she ran into a friend of hers who is in the same profession and works with HD.  We all stand in the lobby of the theater and chit chat before my cousin and I go into the movies.  

My cousin mentions to our new friend that she ran into HD guy a few weeks ago.  He says, oh no, you didn't introduce your cousin to HD did you?  I say, yeah I met him.  He just started shaking his head and says "maaaan, that guy."   So immediately my mind is wondering how I can get him to keep talking without looking like I'm digging for info, which is clearly what I wanted to do.  He kept talking so I just remained quite.  Unfortunately he changed the subject.

Our new friend then talks about how he has an apartment in the city that I live in because he lives over an hour away and often works long hours and sometimes doesn't get off until the early am.  So he brings up the fact that HD was his roommate.  He says man, "our people, our people."  So he makes a remark and I can't remember his exact words right now, but basically, HD got asked to leave.  I think that he was alluding to the fact that HD wasn't holding up his end of the bargain financially.  But just when I got ready to ask specifics on what happened, our new friend got called away.  

I had all kinds of expletives going off in my head.   He had to go before I could get the dirt.  Plus our movie was about to start.  

Either way, I'm pretty sure that a 37 year old man getting put out of an apartment with another guy who is only there a couple nights a week, is very unnecessary.  It's at times like these that I look up and say thanks, and put on my "God is my Homeboy" t-shirt.   From my experience, guys can usually work out roommate situations.  Much better than girls.  So it' amazes me when two guys can't work it out.
