I had a goal last year to run the Army 10-miler. Registration day came. I was reminded that I hadn't trained and I had second thoughts. A few days went by and after talking to a few people, they reminded me that the race was still more than 3 months away and that I had plenty of time to train if I hopped on it. So I said ok woman, go register. Uh yeah, the race registration closed within 2 days. The race was full. I mean really, the nerve. Ok, so couldn't scratch that goal off my list. Did I pick another race to run? No.
So to make up for my laziness, I'm preparing for the Army 10-miler this year. I have the registration date on my calendar and I'll be ready the day that it opens. I've been starting to run again and should be up and ready by the time the race commences in October. Why am I so determined to run this one? Well, I hear that it doesn't have a lot of hills, it's mucho popular so I should be in good company, and my cousin tackled it a few years ago. It'll be a solidarity thing. I wonder if I can get her to run it again. She reads this blog so either she's thinking about it right now or she's already said "Hell no" out loud.
Of course i'm a fan of gadgets and gizmos, so I've been looking at some things to pick up during my training period. Right now, I basically have nada.
As a side note, I hate when people say "Oh this is what you should get" and everything on the list is like a gabillion dollars. So these are things that I realistically want to get. Well, I wont lie, the first one is a bit expensive, so unless my sugar daddy comes during my training period, I probably won't get it. But I really do think it's cool and worth it if you have that kind of money in the cookie jar.
Although, I’m not a Triathlete, this is the Triathlete’s watch. You can use it whether you’re swimming, biking, or running. The thing that I love about it, is that it calculates your workouts on equipment, as well as out of gym activities. All training devices don’t calculate your gym workouts. It’s GPS enabled and wirelessly transfers data to your computer. It has a heart rate monitor and allows you to track weight, body fat, body water and 6 other measurements. Once your data is transferred to your computer, you have the ability to analyze and share with Garmins online community, Garmin Connect. I will say that the one thing that I find cool about Garmin connect is that you can press replay and it’ll play back your activity on the map.
Now let me just say, I love this Sensor. Or let’s say the idea of it. I don’t have one yet. The sensor can be used in conjunction with your iphone, ipod touch, ipod nano, or the Nike+ sportband. I still have an old school ipod (hey it holds more music and it’s still rocking… #don’tjudgeme), so with that being said, I have my eye on the Sportband. Let me say that if you choose to use it with the ipod touch or iphone, you may have to download a different app for that, but I think that it’s included. But back to the sportband.
The Nike+ Sportband ($59.00) tracks distance, pace, time, and calories burned. It holds 30+ hours of data and is water resistant. There is a removable link for you to plug into your usb plug to track your progress. It stores your data and progress toward your goals. The thing that I like about Nike + is that I hear that there is a lot of trash talk in their forums. I hear that they offer support, but you can challenge your friends or other members if you like. There are a lot of things that I’m not the best at, but I can talk trash about any subject any day of the week. I think that challenging your friends and tracking your progress is a great motivator. Nike+ forums have a strong following. I would love to get in. That’s my kind of party

I saw these shirts on one of our Blogs we love, Black Girls Run. These shirts have sweat activated technology. In me and you terms, when you sweat, a design is revealed. You can get a custom design or use one of their existing designs. Best of all, there’s no minimum. I’m thinking about getting a design that says “I did it!.” Being presumptive of course, because WHEN I finish this race, I already know that I’ll be sweating buckets.
Playlists
I need music to keep me rolling, so I try to change my playlists every few weeks. I like to see what others are doing so I check out other peoples playlist. You can find them on itunes and here on Fitness magazines website. I’m not gonna lie. I am not admitting to anything, but, man I miss limewire.
Now I have some big girls, so I have a really hard finding sports bras. Because of my size, I need the support or you can kick running out of the door. This bras has gotten some really great reviews. I went to Nordstrom to try one on a couple of days ago. The fit was really great and it provided a lot of support. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the color that I wanted. Yes I care about color. But for the girls with the big mama’s, they go up to a size K. Check that out!
Shoes-price varies
The one thing that I don’t think that you should skimp on is shoes. Go to a sports store and have them specially fit you for shoes. You may have to run on a treadmill for a little bit, they’ll look at how your foot leans and they’ll tell you which shoe is best for you. I went to Try Sports here in Raleigh and they took their time with me and explained why they chose that particular shoe for me, etc. They said that I could bring the shoes back if they were at all uncomfortable.
If you’re low on cash and need to just grab some shoes on sale, make sure that they’re running shoes and that they are just a little too big. Your feet expand when you run and you do not want them to feel tight. Before I went to my local specialty sports store to grab shoes, I purchased Asic running shoes from an outlet store somewhere. I exercised in those for a while. Mostly in the gym. They weren’t quite as comfortable as the shoes that I have now, but they were cool. They’re my backup shoes. Asics even offers a guide to finding your “shoe fit” on their website.
Have you ladies tried any of these things? Do you have any recommendations?
