Coffee quest for a non-coffee lover

One of the things that made us start this blog is to share the random conversations and emails that we exchange everyday.  Yes, we exchange emails while we should be working.  You mean you don't? 

This is a random email between me and 2 of our guest writers, Kendell and Brown Suga.  So Kendell doesn't like coffee.  Not one bit.  She doesn't understand me and Sugas love for it.  Yeah I don't know what's wrong with her either.  Here is the email.  Keep in mind, there were a few before this, hence the crazy subject line:

If I drink regular coffee it'll be their iced vanilla...i have not tried the Christmas blend though.

Ok, with that being said, what type of coffee should we submit for the coffee tasting?  It can't be too strong.  She loves hot chocolate, so maybe something with a chocolaty taste.  I can't wait to see if we can turn her :)

31 Days of Service - Feed the Hungry

We do not know what struggles and triumphs life has in store for us.  When money is ample we fill our grocery carts with items for the weeks meals and all major food groups are represented.  We buy lunch meats, juice boxes, and snacks for our childrens' lunch boxes. We splurge on ice cream and pie.  We buy the best ingredients for delicious recipes promised by Martha, Bobby, and Gia.  We let produce go bad and complain that there is just not enough space in the fridge. However, when the money is scarce, we stress about how far a dollar can stretch.  We wonder if we will be able to buy the basics and how many meals we can get out of a carton of eggs, 1 gallon of milk, and a loaf of bread.  What about the childrens' lunch boxes?  In the worst of times, we rely on the kindness of others.

Many of us will never know the pain of hunger.  Our life struggles may not include empty pockets, an empty fridge, or an empty cupboard.  For others, hunger will be a constant struggle.  As the economy struggles more American families will experience hunger.  While global hunger has been a popular cause for a long time and deserves all of the many awareness initiatives and actions, hunger in the United States is also in need of those same actions. What I loved about Super Bowl XLV night

First of all, if you're getting this via email, you won't be able to see the videos, so head on over to the Blushblog webpage.

I loved that Nick Collins pulled off one of the most beautiful catches that I've seen in a minute.  It was just pretty (in my muhammad ali voice). 

Be sure to watch it long enough to see the slow motion portion around the 1:05 mark.

 

I loved that these guys were playing like they knew this was the biggest and last game of the season.  Even though, Green Bay had a large lead for most of the game.

I love that I made 40-bucks off of the game last night.  Thank you Green Bay.

I loved, loved, loved, loved Glee last night after the super bowl.  I loved how they incorporated the Chevy commercial into the episode.  I wasn't sure if it was a commercial or part of the show initially.  You have to understand the diabolical Sue Sylvester to truly appreciate it. Always messin with the Glee kids.

 

I loved that the Super Bowl party that I attended had real food.  Not just wings.  We had lasagna, chicken parmesan, BBQ, wings, potato salad, the works.  I was a stuffed turkey.

Of course I loved the commercials.  I didn't get to hear most of them because of the amount of people at the party.  Here is one of my favorites.

 

I know, I know, there's a million that I missed.  I like the little boy dressed like Darth Vadar as well.  That was cute.

Lastly, I LOVED the half time show.  It was one of the best half time shows that I'd seen in a while.  Even with the slight mic problem.  It had me up and dancing with the kids.  Needless to say, I sat down after about 30 seconds.  But it was great.  I need to practice that move that Usher had when he turned his knees in at about the 8:05 mark.  And how can Fergie and those sing AND jump up and down.  The Black Eye Peas are true entertainers. Oh! And Slash? Whaaaaat! Yes!

 

I love that the Super Bowl is a great time to get together with friends and family.  It was a great night, that I am paying for today.

Oh, which brings me to the drink.  You know that you can't forget the drink.  I loved the drink that I chose to stick with all night.  The Red snapper.  Crown Royal Black, amaretto, and cranberry.  mmmm  yummy.

Hope that yours was just as fun.  Since I didn't get to see all of them, what was your favorite commercial?

 

Have Some Bubbly

I love this wine so much, I couldn't wait to write about it.  I'm actually sitting here right now drinking it.  I'm sipping on Barefoot Bubbly Moscato Spumante.  Ummm yummy.

I'm very picky about my moscato.  I don't like it if it's too sweet.  Barefoot notes that this champagne has apricot and peach with a lingering tangerine finish.  I say it's just good.  I was hungry, so I paired it with a turkey and cheese sandwich in our fine restaurant called Le' Home on the Couch.  Grab some and try it.  We'll definitely poppin bottles over here.  What a great Friday night.

I cheated on my diet. Now I must pay!

Hey Blushing Ladies

 

I went out last night and KILLED my diet.  I'm talking chocolate bread pudding for dessert, wings, the whole nine.  So I really have to step up my workout game.  Although it hurts, I figured that I’ll start my football suicides routine.  

 

You start at the endzone, sprint to the 10 yard line, then run back.  Sprint to the 20 yard line, run back to the end zone.  See how long it takes you to finish the whole field.  For those of us who aren’t super athletes, you may not be able to finish the whole field during the first workout, but it’s a great way to track progression.  Your cardio will build up in no time.  Here are some great ways to work the suicides:

• Track your time and try to beat your best time. 

• Take a group of your workout buddies and encourage each other to beat the best time.

• Competitive?  Compete with your workout buddies each week to see who wins.  The winner picks someone to cook a healthy dinner for the group.

• No football field nearby?  If you live in a subdivision, use every other house and/or drive way as a marker.  How long does it take before you circle your entire street or subdivision.   I’ve also included a video that I found on Youtube on how to use the lines in a parking lot as a marker.

Here’s a great meal idea that you can cook for just you, your family, or a group of your workout buddies if you happen to lose the suicides challenge.  I came across it on the Food Network website.

 

Chicken Parmesan

 

 

 

Ingredients

Tomato sauce:

• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 small yellow onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
• 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes, preferably organic
• 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
• Salt to taste
• 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves

Chicken:

• Cooking spray
• 4 thin chicken cutlets (about 1 1/4 pounds total)
• Salt to taste
• 2 large egg whites
• 6 tablespoons dry Italian bread crumbs
• 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 4 to 5 teaspoons olive oil
• 1/2 cup part-skim shredded mozzarella cheese

Tomato Sauce: Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, vinegar, salt, and red pepper flakes; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the flavors are blended and the sauce begins to thicken slightly, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in the basil.

Chicken: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Spray a 9 by 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Sprinkle the cutlets with the salt. Lightly beat the egg whites in a medium bowl. Combine the bread crumbs and Parmesan on a sheet of waxed paper. Spread the flour on another sheet of waxed paper. Working with 1 piece of chicken at a time, dip both sides into the flour, shaking off excess. Dip each piece into the egg whites, shaking off excess, and then press both sides into the breading to coat.

Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken (in batches, if necessary) and cook until browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer the chicken, in 1 layer, to the baking dish. Spoon the sauce over the chicken then sprinkle with the cheese. Bake, covered loosely with a tent of foil, until the cheese is melted and the sauce is bubbly, about 12 to 15 minutes.

Nice & Greasy

It's turning out to be a wonderful Friday.  It's nice and sunny outside and the South can't let go of summer.  It's hot as fish grease outside!  But one more thing is happening.  The fair is circulating around different states.  It made me smile when I came across this article on a website called Endless Simmer.  They had all of the good fair eats that cause me to reach for nothing but lettuce for the next month.  But they forgot a couple of good eats in two of the places that I call home.

The first is at the Maryland state fair in Timonium, Maryland.

  
  
They are known for Crab Cakes and great views, but this year, the state brought fried Pop Tarts and Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches.  Man, I'd love to dig into the fried PB&J.  That's just my speed.

The next is the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, NC

 

Even though this years fair will include an appearance by celebrity chef Bobby Flay.  We can't forget the reasons that draw us there in the first place.  I love the deep fried snickers.  They have deep fried Pecan Pie, but everyone raved about the deep fried macaroni and cheese last year.

Black Beauty

I am a magazine fanatic.  I get so many each month that I can't keep up with them.  By the time that I finish reading all of the magazines from January, I'm getting them for March.  Well I'm glad that I took the time to read my Glamour. 

It had a great article in it by Iman's eldest daughter Zulekha.  Zulekha spoke about her battle with weight and her decision to have weight loss surgery.  And in case your sitting there scratching your head, yes, that would be supermodel, cosmetic mogul Iman.  Zulekha's dad was Imans first husband, basketball star Spencer Haywood.

Most of us have gone through body issues at some point in our lives.  But I can't imagine how hard that must be when your mother is a supermodel, your dad is a basketball star, and your step-dad is a rock star.  That pressure has to be unbearable.  I applaud her tenacity and her desire to find her own way.  I feel like she was re-living this while she was writing because I felt like I was walking down this road with her while I was reading it.

People tend to judge those who decide on surgery so harshly, but to each his own.  Sometimes you get to the point where you need that to start over and that has to be a tough decision.

I've never had to go to these extremes to hide my insecurities, but i've had to do a cover here and there, so I could relate.  Below is one of the portions of the story that I found most gripping.

I awoke the morning of my twenty-eighth birthday determined to make it my most fabulous year yet. Tonight, I thought, I’m painting the town red in that slinky cap-sleeve number that shows off my décolletage. I opened a birthday card from my ex-boyfriend Eric,* who had remained a close friend. Inside was a top-five list of why I was the most wonderful woman he knows. Number three: “Because you always let me shower first—in case the hot water’s tricky.” When Eric used to spend the night, I’d tell him to shower while I made the bed and put on coffee. “The hot water’s tricky sometimes,” I’d assure him, flashing him a smile.

But the plumbing in my building was fine. The truth: At 330 pounds, I had developed heel spurs and swollen knees that made it excruciatingly painful to stand up after lying down for eight hours, so getting out of bed was always an orchestrated event. I’d send any man who slept over off to shower, and once the coast was clear, I’d swing my legs out and put my feet on the ground gingerly, allowing the blood to return to my feet and legs. After a minute, I could stand. After another minute, I was comfortable enough to start walking.

Reading Eric’s card was a powerful reminder that, while I’d done my very best to love my super-plus-size body, I couldn’t keep lying to myself or anyone else. The physical pain I’d endured in my twenties could not continue into my thirties. I had to lose weight.

But how? I have more or less been on a diet since I was eight years old. None of them worked. An overweight kid and already dining for sport, my first was the “Basta” diet. At home, my mother, Iman, a beauty icon and devotee of clean eating, would whisper basta (“enough” in Italian) when I was in danger of overeating. The choice was always mine, and I usually put down the fork. But I also got hip to late-night snacking, raiding the refrigerator and cupboards after midnight. At school I routinely traded lunches, and when I was old enough to buy my own, I would pass over apples for Hostess Apple Pies. We always had plenty of nutritious snacks at home, but there was nothing more satisfying than savoring a secret Twinkie that I exchanged homework answers for. In the end, all I learned from basta was how to make PB&J in the dark.

Cheers! Cat's Eye+Camera Suggestion

I was turned on to a new drink thanks to our own Brown Sugar correspondent.  She obtained the recipe from the this website.  It's called the Cat's Eye.   By the time that I went to sleep, I was singing, "Cat in the cradle and the silver spoon, little boy blue and the man on the moon."  

That's not really the name of the drink you say.  Exactly!  I say.  Ummm, ok moving on.

I have to admit, I had a hard time finding passion fruit.  I was surprised since I went looking for it in one of my favorite natural stores, Whole Foods.  I ended up finding a fruit blend that contained Passion Fruit and a couple of other fruits.  It didn't contain any sugar, so I made Simple Syrup and added it to the fruit juice.  I went old school when I added the simple syrup to the fruit juice, meaning that I didn't measure how much syrup I added to the fruit juice.  I just added the syrup to the juice bit by bit and tasted it until it tasted sweet, but not too sweet.

Here's the drink recipe, followed by the simple syrup recipe (just in case you find yourself in the same situation).

Cat’s Eye

1 1/2 ounce Tequila (Plata or Blanco)

2 ounces Passionfruit Juice (sweetened)

1 ounce Orange Juice

Shake all ingredients in shaker and serve up or on the rocks.


 
   

Simple Syrup

1 Cup Water

1 Cup Granulated Sugar (Feel free to use Splenda for less Calories)
 
Bring Water to a Boil.  Dissolve Sugar into boiling water.  Once dissolved remove from heat and let cool.  Keep it in a well sealed bottle in the fridge.  You'll find many uses for it, like more cocktails or sweet tea or more cocktails!

Let's Hear it for the Boys + My Find

Lets Hear It For The Boys!!!

Ok, have you ever been so extremely proud of people that you don't even know that you could just burst out in tears.  Alright, maybe not, but I almost did when I read this article.   The long and short of it is that at a high school where only 4 percent of the current senior class read at grade level when they were freshmen, the entire senior class has now been accepted to college.  Many of these kids were from some of the city's roughest and poorest neighborhoods.  That is phenomenal for any senior class.  Much less for the senior class of an all male, all african-american, public school.   Excuse me.  Let me type that in capital letters, just in case you missed it.  100% OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF AN ALL MALE, ALL AFRICAN-AMERICAN, PUBLIC SCHOOL, IN CHICAGO ILLINOIS GOT ACCEPTED TO COLLEGE.   WOW!!!  They deserve to be celebrated and exemplified by all races and genders. 

I heard it noted earlier (sorry I forgot where) that they didn't lower their standards when the administration noticed that many of the students performed below grade-level, they rose the students up.  They didn't make the student's settle for less.  They had the students achieve more.  And now when you factor in what many of them have to go through to even have to get to school, they have overcome more than their counter-parts.  They required longer school days and more english credits.

I think that even as adults, we should pay attention.  This should be a lesson that we should pass on to our children, nieces, nephews and cousins, even if the school system doesn't.  Each of these boys are assigned college counselors from day one.  Can we make it a point to do this within our own families?  School administrations don't rule our roost.  We do.  If school requires kids to read one book a week, why can't parents require an additional.  A lot of districts are lowering standards.  Let's raise them back up at home.  I don't have any kids, so it's hard to offer advice, but this certainly provides inspiration.

My Find

I've been on the hunt for a gaudy, 1980's cognac decanter forever.  I felt like goldilocks.  Each one that I found was either too light, too streamlined, or not sitcom/soap opera enough.  I wanted a real 1980's George Jefferson/Dynasty crystal cut heavy decanter. 

I've combed Home Goods, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, CB2, Pier 1, Crate and Barrel, Red Envelope, the list just goes on and on.  I found one on Ebay, but wasn't willing to pay over $100 for it.  That was just asking too much.  I didn't want it that bad. 

Alas, I didn't give up the hunt.  The good thing about stores like Marshalls, Homegoods, and TJ Maxx is that their inventory changes so often.  You have to constantly visit.  Last night, I wasn't even looking and I past this little gem.  It was like I was on an episode of Falcon Crest.

I fell in love with the crystal cut and weight.  Oh and the $20 price tag. 

I think that i'll write them off on my taxes as a security system.  I'll take a drink and hit a burglar on the head with it.  I think that I'll tie a nice satin ribbon around the neck with a label so that I can remember what cognac I have in the decanter.  After a few drinks and after some time, I tend to forget :)  I may come up with another system.  We'll see.

  

Holiday Cocktails = Intoxicating Fun for All

Show your bartending skills for those bland holiday parties.  I'm all over the Midnight Kick!

 

The Christmas Jones Cocktail (from the menu of Metro Marche, New York)

Ingredients:

• 4 fresh strawberries
• 1 part vodka
• 2 tsp superfine sugar
• 5 oz pineapple juice
• 7-Up
• mint sprigs for garnish

Directions:

1. In a blender, whiz the vodka, strawberries, sugar and pineapple juice together.
2. Pour the mix equally into two highball glasses.
3. Top with 7-Up.
4. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Ingredients:

• 1 oz Dry Gin
• 1 1/2 oz Peppermint Schnapps
• 1/2 oz Water
• 1 Stick Peppermint Candy

Directions:

Strain gin and peppermint schnapps into martini glass. Add peppermint stick.

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 oz. Cabo Wabo Blanco Tequila
• 4 oz.  Hot Cocoa Mix
• 1/2 oz.  Coffee Liqueur
• Whipped Cream

Directions:

Pour all ingredients into a coffee cup. Stir Well. Finish with a dollop of whipped cream.

The Midnight Kick

Ingredients:

• 2 oz.  Cabo Anejo Tequlla
• Orange Slice
• Cinnamon

Directions:

Wet the rim of a chilled shot glass with the orange slice. Then rim the shot glass with powdered cinnamon on a plate. Be careful not to turn the glass right side up until it has been rimmed. The orange liquid will drip otherwise. Shake the Cabo Tequila with ice in a shaker and strain into the chilled shot glass. Slam the shot and then bite into the orange slice to finish.
